 The enduring principles about human behavior taught at Leadership for Physician Executives help physicians find solid, specific solutions to some of their most troubling work-related problems. In Leadership for Physician Executives, participants learn to read people situations more accurately. They become skilled at harnessing the intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm of their teams. They learn how to capture the frenetic energy released during organization change and convert it into efficiency, productivity, and new opportunities. Physicians also learn how to master to dual aspect of the leadership role - the personal and the accountable.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Apply the seminar's concepts to increase your understanding of colleagues, direct reports, others (including patients), as well as yourself;
Organize work more productively;
Analyze, clarify, and solve problems concerning people and their work roles;
Identify the best available means for creating optimal shared solutions, while building trust and mutual respect;
Develop strategies and practices for leading people (physicians and non-physicians) more effectively;
Take charge and lead change in hospitals and other health-care environments (by galvanizing people around a sense of common purpose); and
Proceed to a become performance-driven, vigilant, and accountable physician-leader.

The faculty members are physician-executives with significant administrative and consultation experience who help physicians transfer their traditional perspectives and skills to their new roles. Previous participants of Leadership for Physician Executives have represented the full range of medical specialties and occupied important positions in: group practices, HMOs, insurance companies, academic departments, public health services, hospital administration, clinic administrations, and the military. Seminar participants examine the implications of new and different kinds of power and recognition, changes in ethics and values, and changes in relationships with colleagues and other healthcare professionals. They confront problems in decision making, conflict resolution, organizational structure, motivation, change - problems previously unrelated to the practice of medicine.

Based on participant feedback, Leadership for Physician Executives has been continuously improved and updated since its inception in 1984. The format of a traditional live course - with didactic lectures, small-group discussions, and one-on-one consultation sessions - has stood the test of time. Even mealtimes provide valuable learning opportunities.

Concepts taught are then applied through small-group discussion of actual cases that participants prepare before the seminar. The highly qualified faculty, individual attention, small-group problem solving, individual case discussions, and opportunity to learn from the diverse experience of other physician-participants have made this seminar among the most highly regarded continuing education programs.

Among the reasons that physicians value the seminar so highly is its individual attention to the participants. This is not a seminar on simple managerial mechanics; its focus is on the process of leadership.
